How To Construct an Ontology

Step-by-step illustration of how to construct an ontology.

Ontology of How to Construct an Ontology

Step 1 – Object of the ontology

  • Specify construct/problem/domain

Step 2 – Elements of the ontology, terminology of the object

  • Specify key words/phrases of the construct/problem/domain
    • Nouns – their denotations, connotations, and corresponding synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms
    • Verbs – their denotations, connotations, and corresponding synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms
  • Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the key words/phrases

Step 3 – Dimensions of the ontology, taxonomies of the terminology of the object

  • Group the key words/phrases of the construct/problem/domain
    • Nominally – unilevel, multilevel
    • Ordinally – unilevel, multilevel
    • Scaled – unilevel, multilevel
  • Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the taxonomies of key words/phrases

Step 4 – Organization of the ontology, order and connect the taxonomies of the terminology of the object

  • Logically organize the taxonomies left to right (right to left in some languages)
  • Add connecting words/phrases to make the pathways semantically interpretable
  • Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the order of dimensions
