Step-by-step illustration of how to construct an ontology.
Ontology of How to Construct an Ontology

Step 1 – Object of the ontology
- Specify construct/problem/domain
Step 2 – Elements of the ontology, terminology of the object
- Specify key words/phrases of the construct/problem/domain
- Nouns – their denotations, connotations, and corresponding synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms
- Verbs – their denotations, connotations, and corresponding synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms
- Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the key words/phrases
Step 3 – Dimensions of the ontology, taxonomies of the terminology of the object
- Group the key words/phrases of the construct/problem/domain
- Nominally – unilevel, multilevel
- Ordinally – unilevel, multilevel
- Scaled – unilevel, multilevel
- Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the taxonomies of key words/phrases
Step 4 – Organization of the ontology, order and connect the taxonomies of the terminology of the object
- Logically organize the taxonomies left to right (right to left in some languages)
- Add connecting words/phrases to make the pathways semantically interpretable
- Induce, deduce, abduce, iterate, and validate the order of dimensions
