The tag line for the G20 2023 conclave in Shillong, Meghalaya, India, July 5-7, 2023, was “Nature Solves: A New Framework for Our Sustainable Future.” The commentary is my reflection on the tag line.
‘Nature solves’, the tag line asserted.
Natures solves? How? I wondered.
Nature solves! Many speakers exclaimed.
Did they believe nature can solve?
Did they hope nature will solve?
What nature? How does it solve? To sustain what?
What is nature’s sūtra? I pondered.
This is nature’s sūtra to sustain the earth:
Let me explain.
Which nature?
Human nature of the earth’s people,
Animal nature of microbes to mammals,
Botanical nature of algae to banyan trees, and
Material nature of the microscopic to the megascopic.
The many natures that conflict, cooperate, collaborate, and coexist,
To solve to sustain the earth.
Nature solves how?
It continues effective pathways, reinforcing them.
It creates new pathways, experimenting with them.
It changes ineffective pathways, redirecting them.
It corrects misaligned pathways, realigning them.
It adapts old pathways, changing their structure to fit the function.
It exapts new pathways, keeping their structure and changing the function.
It evolves novel pathways, mutating old pathways.
It eliminates defunct pathways, deleting them from its collective memory.
It creates, continues, changes, corrects, adapts, exapts, evolves, and eliminates
To design the many pathways for a sustainable future.
Nature solves to sustain what?
To sustain human life on earth,
To sustain animal life on earth,
To sustain botanical life on earth,
To sustain the environment of the earth,
To sustain the ecology of the earth, and
To sustain the manifold future of one earth, its one family.
The nature’s sūtra to sustain the earth
Combines the four natures,
The eight solutions, and
The five types of sustenance
To form a roadmap of 160 pathways.
Each pathway conjoins:
A type of nature and
A type of its solution for
A type of sustenance.
The following are a few.
Human nature creates to sustain human life on earth.
Humans create technologies, medicines, and crops to sustain life on earth.
Animal nature changes to sustain the ecology of earth.
Animals change color, habitat, and migration to sustain the ecology
of the earth.
Botanical nature evolves to sustain the environment of earth.
Plants evolve and adapt to the new environment to sustain life on earth.
Material nature continues to sustain the botanical life of the earth.
Alluvial soil in the flood plains fertilizes the agriculture on earth.
These are nature’s pathways,
With many natural manifestations of each pathway.
Nature explores them systematically,
And learns from the feedback naturally.
That is nature’s roadmap to sustain the earth.
That is nature’s solution to sustain the earth.
That is nature’s sūtra to sustain the earth.
